ALERT!!!!

Kissimmee Police Warn of Hitman Scam

Kissimmee, Fla. (February 1, 2012) – Kissimmee police detectives are warning citizens of a hitman scam that could become a problem in the Central Florida area.

On January 30, 2012, officers met with the 56-year-old female victim who told them she had received an e-mail that was titled “Your Life Has Been Paid For”.  The e-mail stated that the person was contracted to kill the victim, but because he took pity on her he was offering her the opportunity to pay him $9,000 to terminate the contract.

Detectives have contacted the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), which is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the National White Collar Crime Center and is funded in part by the Bureau of Justice Assistance and have learned that this scam has been occurring since 2006.  This particular e-mail was originated from somewhere in Germany and appears to be spam.

Detectives are encouraging citizens, if you receive an e-mail of this nature, do not send any money to the originator and contact your local police department immediately.

“Internet scams are becoming more prevalent,” said Chief Iwanski, “It is important that our citizens bring these types of threats to the attention of law enforcement and do not send any type of monetary compensation to the originators.”

Please contact the Kissimmee Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit if you have received any type of internet threats.

What is a Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood Watch; "it's one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent crime and reduce fear.

 Neighborhood Watch fights the isolation that crime both creates and feeds upon.

It forges bonds among area residents, helps reduce burglaries and robberies, and improves relation between police and the communities they serve."

The Neighborhood Crime Watch program is designed to help protect your entire neighborhood. This program enlists the cooperation of all your surrounding neighbors to become educated about crime prevention and to help you get to know each other.
 If everyone works together to become aware of potential danger signs and responds to them, your neighborhood can develop an advantageous system for everyone.

This program is for watching, not for doing. We do not want you to take risks or to take the law into your own hands.
If you see something suspicious - report that activity to the police. Let the police handle it. Just knowing that people are watching can reduce the risk of burglary and other crime activity in participating neighbors.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH.....Dos and Don'ts

Watch members in many instances, debate as to whether an incident warrants reporting or not. The following is a reminder as to what Kissimmee Police and Osceola Sheriff's Department, have told the Oaks Watch.

When to call Police?

One of the hardest things for Watch members is to learn to trust their instincts.

 If it looks suspicious ...it probably is,  don't hesitate ... call the police.

 Some people fear that raising a false alarm will reflect poorly on them. Not so. It's okay to inform the police about something that "looks a bit fishy," and let them take it from there.

Look at the other side of the coin ... how would you feel if you didn't call to report your suspicions, and, as a result, failed to prevent a criminal act in your part of the neighborhood? How would you feel if a neighbor failed to prevent a criminal act on your property?

Even if you're reluctant to report a crime whether it's in progress or already has been committed, at least inform your Block Captain or Coordinator.

How to Report a Crime or

Suspicious Activity

PLEASE DO Call the non emergency numbers IF THREATENING!

911 if it is life threatening

  • Identify yourself as a Watch member;
  • be prepared to describe the person(s), vehicle(s) or circumstances as fully as possible;
  • ask for an "incident" number to facilitate a follow-up inquiry as a later date;
  • record the date and time of your call;
  • keep the suspect(s) and incident under surveillance from a safe distance until police arrive;
  • make a second call if the activity gets worse; and
  • inform your Block Captain or designate when time permits.

DON'T ATTEMPT APPREHENSION OR PURSUIT

DON'T ATTEMPT TO CONFIRM YOUR SUSPICIONS

by approaching a home or vehicle where a crime may have take place, or may still be in progress. Go immediately to a safe distance, call 9-1-1 and wait for police.

MAKE THE RIGHT CALL! Every call is important, but not all calls are life threatening, and not all calls are police emergencies.

In Kissimmee you can stay anonymous by e-mailing the Kissimmee Police SeeItSayIt@kissimmee.org
Capitalise every first word in See It Say It...

Call Non-Emergency

A neighborhood Watch member can not make a call to the police for you,You must do it your self.
Only you can give the correct description of what you are calling about.
You do not need to give your Name but I would advise you to give them your cell phone or a number that they can reach you once they get here in the Oaks so you can help them with the correct directions if they need them. This will help a lot. They will not put your number in a bank or anything like that. you can be 100% anonymous.
